NTSA Vehicle Inspection Guide
Complete guide to getting your vehicle inspected and certified by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) in Kenya.
What is NTSA Vehicle Inspection?
The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) conducts mandatory vehicle inspections to ensure cars are roadworthy and safe. All private vehicles must pass inspection before:
- Initial registration after purchase
- Renewing annual license (fitness certificate)
- If involved in accident or modification
The inspection checks whether the vehicle meets the technical, safety, and environmental standards NTSA applies. Time at the centre varies with the queue. Confirm the current fee on the NTSA portal before you go. Rockland Auto does not book or pay the inspection.
When Do You Need NTSA Inspection?
| Scenario | Required? | Frequency |

| New vehicle registration | ✓ Yes | Once (at purchase) |
| Annual license renewal | ✓ Yes | Every 12 months |

Visual Inspection (15 minutes)
Inspector walks around the vehicle checking:
- Exterior condition (no major damage affecting safety)
- All lights functioning correctly
- Wipers and mirrors operational
- Horn working
- Tires in good condition with minimum tread
- Engine bay for leaks or missing safety items
- Interior seatbelts and emergency exits
Brake Test (10 minutes)
Depending on vehicle type, brakes are tested on a dynamometer (roller test) or manually. Braking response must meet safety standards.
Emission Test (5 minutes, if applicable)
For petrol vehicles under 5 years, emission gas is tested. Must meet environmental standards.
Road Test (Optional, 10 minutes)
For new vehicles or those with previous failures, inspector may take a short test drive to verify steering, braking, and overall drivability.
