Why Verify Before Buying?

Car scams are common in Kenya. Fraudsters use stolen vehicles, fake documents, and pressure tactics to cheat buyers. Spending 15 minutes verifying a seller can save you KES 2–5 million.

Step 1: Check Seller Verification Status

On Rockland Auto, look for the green "Verified" badge next to the seller's name. This means:

  • Identity verified via government ID (national ID, passport, driver's license).
  • Phone number confirmed via SMS code.
  • Account passed anti-fraud checks.

⚠️ Never buy from unverified sellers. If they won't verify, there's likely a reason (stolen ID, fake documents, etc.).

Step 2: Review Seller Ratings

Ratings reveal seller behavior over time:

  • 4–5 stars, 50+ reviews: Reliable. Buyers consistently happy.
  • 3–4 stars, 20–50 reviews: Decent. Some complaints, likely minor.
  • Below 3 stars or few reviews: Risky. Either new seller or history of problems.

Read the actual review comments. Watch for patterns: "delayed delivery," "engine problems," "misrepresented condition."

Step 3: Verify Contact Information

Verify the seller's identity is real:

  • Phone number: Call the seller. Does the voice/background sound genuine? Do they speak clearly about the car?
  • Business registration (for dealers): Ask for certificate number. Check on eCitizen: https://www.ecitizen.go.ke
  • Address: Ask for physical location. Verify on Google Maps. Does the business exist there?
  • Response time: Professional sellers respond within 1–2 hours. Very delayed responses = red flag.

🚩 Red Flags to Stop Communication

  • Seller pushes you to decide quickly ("I have another buyer waiting")
  • Asks for deposit before you view the car
  • Unwilling to show original documents or take photos
  • Story keeps changing about the car's history
  • Phone number doesn't match ID information
  • Seller wants to meet alone or in isolated locations

Step 4: Request Documentation Early

Before scheduling a viewing, ask for:

  • logbook photo: Verify owner name, VIN, and dates.
  • Insurance certificate: Confirms car is roadworthy and insured.
  • Service records: Shows maintenance history and legitimacy.
  • Multiple car photos: Exterior (all angles), interior, engine bay, close-ups.

If the seller refuses to share photos of documents, walk away. Legitimate sellers are happy to provide this upfront.

Step 5: Verify Vehicle Details

Compare information across all documents:

  • VIN (Vehicle Identification Number): Should match on the log book, chassis, and engine block. If it differs, the car is likely stolen or re-badged.
  • Mileage: Check if mileage is consistent across service records. Big jumps = possible odometer fraud.
  • Owner history: How many owners? More than 4–5 is suspicious (could indicate problems).
  • Registration dates: Match log book with insurance and service records. Should all align.

Step 6: Meet in a Safe Location

Never meet alone or in secluded areas:

  • Good locations: Busy shopping mall parking lot, car dealership lot, police station, well-lit main road.
  • Bad locations: Seller's home, dark alley, deserted road, industrial area after hours.
  • Bring someone: Bring a trusted friend or family member. Preferably someone with car knowledge.
  • Bring a mechanic: For cars above KES 2 million, hire an independent mechanic (KES 3,000–5,000) to inspect.

Additional Verification Steps

Check for Stolen Vehicle Status

  • Contact the Insurance Industry Association of Kenya (IIACK) to verify the car hasn't been declared a total loss.
  • Visit NTSA office to check if the vehicle has any outstanding fines or suspension.

Verify Payment Safety

Only after full verification:

  • Use bank transfer or M-Pesa for full traceability.
  • Never send advance payment or deposit.
  • Never accept checks, promises, or IOUs.
